MISC:Iceland is the westernmost European country. Reykjavik is the
world's most northern metropolis and has more book stores and
publishing houses per capita than any other city in the world. Iceland
has the highest literacy rate in the world, publishing more books than
any other country. It has one of the highest standards of living, with
unemployment less than 1 percent; and one of the lowest crime rates,
only one armed robbery has been recorded in the entire history of
Iceland. Having about 30 active volcanos, it is one of the most
intensely volcanic areas of the world; since 1500 its volcanos have
accounted for approximately 1/3 of the earth's output of lava. Over 30%
of the country's energy needs are met by geothermal energy; 75% of the
homes are heated by hot water from the ground, hot lava is even used in
one town. 80% of the land is classified as glacier, lava fields, or
other "wastelands"; only 1/6 is inhabitable, about 1% is arable.
Iceland has maintained the purity of its language for over 1,000 years.
Its Parliament is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. Iceland
won its independence from Denmark in 1944. Member of NATO. Member of
